Costa Coffee said Thursday that it will lay off up to 1,650 employees as it streamlines its U.K. store structure in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Coca-Cola Co.-owned brand --which has over 2,700 coffee shops in the U.K. and Ireland-- warned that there's still "high levels of uncertainty" as to when trade will recover to pre-coronavirus levels.

Costa said that it reviewed a number of options before making the decision to cut these jobs.

The company currently employs 16,000 people in its wholly-owned U.K. stores and a further 10,500 across 1,100 franchise stores.
