BASF and Sweden's Vattenfall announced on Monday that they had placed an order with Denmark's Vestas to supply 112 turbines for their joint Nordlicht wind power project in the German North Sea.

The supply contract covers V236 turbines, which according to the two partners are currently the most powerful turbines on the market.

The equipment - to be manufactured from low-carbon steel - will be installed on the Nordlicht 1 and 2 farms, located 85 kilometers north of the island of Borkum.

From 2028, these two projects should produce enough energy to power around 1.6 million homes.

BASF holds a 49% stake in the Nordlicht 1 and 2 fields, which will give it access to almost half of their production to power its main European chemical sites, and especially its gigantic Ludwigshafen plant.
