MUNICH (dpa-AFX) - The collapse of the highway bridge in the port of Baltimore is not expected to cost the insurer Allianz too much. At most, a charge in the low to mid double-digit million euro range is to be expected, said CFO Claire-Marie Coste-Lepoutre on Wednesday in a telephone conference on the figures for the first quarter.

At the end of March, the container ship "Dali" rammed into a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the city's port, causing the four-lane bridge, which is more than 2.5 kilometers long, to collapse. The supply chains of major companies are also affected by the destroyed transport link. The major reinsurers Munich Re and Hannover Re believe they are liable for part of the damage. However, managers at both companies have so far refused to quantify the expected total loss or the impact on their own business.

The US transport authority has now published an initial preliminary report on the cause of the accident. According to the report, there was a power failure on board the ship shortly before the collision. There had also been two power failures during maintenance work before the ship set sail./stw/jha/
