Boston Beer said that it does not comment on rumors in response to a Wall Street Journal report of sale talks.

The Samuel Adams parent company said late Friday that it was aware of WSJ's article on sale speculation. WSJ reported earlier in the day that the company was in talks with Japanese whisky-maker Suntory about a sale.

The news sent shares of Boston Beer surging. The stock finished up 22%.

Boston Beer said in response that it was fully focused on its business as an independent company and its return to growth.
