Spie announced on Thursday that it had been commissioned by the city of The Hague to bring a Cold War-era fallout shelter back to life as a cultural center.

The engineering group explains that the city council has decided to convert the 'Noodzetel', a former underground bunker, into a space dedicated to the municipal archives and rehearsal rooms for pop bands.

The site comprises two underground levels, each with a surface area of 900 square meters.

Level -1 will house a municipal archive room with an oxygen reduction system, while level -2 will house three music studios, equipped with soundproof walls.

Spie reports that it was entrusted with the entire project, which began at the beginning of the year, from demolition to construction, both for the architecture and the electrical and mechanical installations.

According to the company, the uniqueness of the project lies in the fact that the construction area is accessible via a single point of entry, through an opening measuring just 2.40 meters by 1.25 meters.

Work is scheduled for completion in December.
