On Friday, Rio Tinto announced plans to install carbon-free aluminum electrolysis cells at its Arvida plant in Quebec, using Elysis technology thanks to an initial technology license from the Elysis joint venture.

An investment of USD 285 million, in partnership with the Quebec government, will enable the construction of a demonstration plant with an annual production capacity of 2,500 tonnes of aluminium with no direct greenhouse gas emissions, scheduled for 2027.

This project is designed to strengthen Rio Tinto's leadership position in low-carbon aluminum and develop its expertise in carbon-free electrolysis technology.
