Netflix plans to soon stop showing the percentage that should show how well you "match" with a particular movie, series on show. Instead, the streaming service plans to rely even more on so-called "Tags.

Netflix has created and bought up a huge amount of content over the years. This is obviously a plus, but it also means that, as a user, you sometimes lose track. However, it is important to the streaming service that people easily find the movies, series and shows they will like. In fact, Netflix discovered that if users have not found something new to watch within 53 seconds, chances are they won't watch anything at all.

Match

Netflix has therefore been experimenting for some time with all kinds of ways to make those suggestions better, although it still doesn't seem to have found the golden formula in that area. Once there was the five-star rating system, but that's long gone.

Then again, the "Surprise Me" button was silently dropped a year ago, putting more focus on match rate. The latter was not introduced until 2021, but never really caught on. Those percentages, which you can see when you watch Netflix on your computer, often turned out to be rather random and people never quite understood what exactly they were based on. Consequently, a Netflix representative revealed to the website IndieWire that "Match" will be dropped.

Tags

What Netflix does plan to continue to put plenty of effort into are Tags, which are the words or short phrases you see displayed on movies, series or other programs when you hover over them on Netflix's homepage.

TheNew York Timesrecently reported that the streaming service employs as many as 30 full-time employees working on tags. Thus, there are now 3,000 different types of tags, which are constantly being discussed by those in charge. Netflix believes that this system sets them apart from other streaming services that do not devote as many resources to this.
