Jersey Electricity : JE supports Child Accident Prevention

Jersey Electricity is pleased to again support Child Accident Prevention Jersey (CAPJ) Safety In Action which sees over 1,000 Year 5 pupils from all Jersey primary schools receive safety training during eight days of workshops at Highlands College. The children, in small teams, take part in six, fact-packed, interactive 20-minute workshops covering Safety in the Kitchen, Road Safety, Safe Play, Beach Safety, Fire and First Aid. And there's no doubt the star of this year's Safety In Action was the spectacular - and frightening - demonstration by the Fire and Rescue Service of what happens to a chip pan fire if you try and extinguish it with water. Thankfully, all the children watching knew that it's definitely not the thing to do and braced themselves as the small flames from the burning pan of oil erupted over three metres high as the firefighter poured just a small cup of liquid on to them.

Also watching was JE's Trainee Health, Safety and Environmental Technician Matthew Malorey, who is also a part-time retained firefighter. He said: 'I don't recall anything like this when I was at school. It is a fantastic initiative and really brings home the safety message to children in a way they can understand and remember.' Also in attendance on day six of the project was Lady Dalton, wife of Lieutenant Governor, Air Chief Marshall Sir Stephen Dalton. Lady Dalton was shown around all the workshops by CAP Co-Ordinator Mandy Le Tensorer and at the end of the session handed out CAP goodie bags to all the children aided by Safety Sam himself.
