Flotek Industries' JP3 analyzer has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency to monitor oil and gas flaring and ensure the emissions are in line with recently enacted rules.

The instrument can precisely measure net heating values in flare gases, the Houston-based company said Tuesday.

It is the first to be approved as an alternative measuring method under the EPA's New Sourced Performance Standards OOOOb regulations, Flotek said.

"With over 55,000 existing flares in the United States expected to be subject to some level of monitoring regulation by 2028, this approval positions JP3 to significantly expand its footprint into this new upstream market space," Flotek said.

The agency published the rule on March 8 and granted reconsideration of two aspects of the standards for oil and natural gas operations in May, in response to petitions from the industry, according to the EPA's website.
