TERNA: GREEN LIGHT FOR NEW "LIVIGNO - PREMADIO" UNDERGROUND CONNECTION IN THE SONDRIO PROVINCE

A €65 million investment to increase the efficiency and sustainability of the Valtellina valley's

electricity grid

The work is one of the main projects planned by Terna in the locations that will host the 2026

Winter Olympics

Plans for a new 20 km power line formed of two underground cables

Rome, 5 January 2023 - The Livigno - Premadio electricity connection planned by Terna in the Sondrio province has been authorised by decree of Italy's Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security.

Led by Stefano Donnarumma, the Company will invest €65 million in the work, one of the main projects planned by Terna to increase energy reliability at the host locations of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Milan and Cortina.

The new infrastructure foresees the construction of a power line, formed of two underground cables, between the primary cabin in Livigno owned by the local distributor and the Terna substation located in Premadio, in the municipality of Valdidentro. The lines will almost entirely affect the same route, around a total of 20 km in length, partly following State Road 301 at over 1,500 metres above sea level.

The plan will ensure greater meshing of the electricity grid in the area, also increasing the resilience of the energy transmission system in areas that have been heavily affected by extreme weather events in recent years.

All preliminary activities to begin the works, planned for 2023, will be launched soon with the aim to complete and commission the connection by the second half of 2025, just in time for the start of the event.

With an investment of over €200 million, Terna has planned a package of 12 projects to be carried out in Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto, regions that will host the 2026 Winter Olympics. Overall, the projects involve over 130 km of new underground cables with a low environmental impact.

In Lombardy, the infrastructure will mainly affect the area of Milan, with 4 new underground connections, and the Valtellina valley, where, among other projects, the new Premadio substation is under construction. Built using compact gas-insulated technology, its equipment will be placed inside buildings that are architecturally in-keeping with the surrounding mountainous landscape.

To meet the challenging timetable to complete the authorised projects, also located in mountainous areas that are difficult to access and where there is snow for long periods of the year, Terna has carefully optimised the procurement of materials and defined a specific schedule for the works.

The cables will be supplied and installed by Brugg Cables, a Terna Group company specialising in the design and construction of underground infrastructure.
