TERNA: AROUND €220 MILLION SAVINGS FOR THE NATIONAL

ELECTRICITY SYSTEM THANKS TO DAYLIGHT-SAVING

Lower consumption by 410 million kWh and 200 thousand tonnes of CO2 not emitted into the

atmosphere

From 2004 to 2022 around €2 billion and 10.9 billion kWh of electricity have been saved in Italy

Rome, 24 March 2023 - According to estimates by Terna, the company that manages the national transmission grid, in the seven months in which daylight saving time will be in force, Italy will save around €220 million, thanks to a lower consumption of electricity equal to about 410 million kWh which will also generate a significant environmental benefit, quantifiable in the reduction of about 200 thousand tons of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

Daylight-saving time will be in effect from Sunday, 26 March when clocks will be set forward by 60 minutes at 2:00 a.m. and will end on 29 October, with the return to wintertime.

The financial savings estimated for the period of DST in 2023 has been calculated considering that the average cost of electricity per kWh for the typical domestic user in the protected market (according to data from ARERA) is currently around 53-euro cents before tax. The approximately 410 million kWh of lower electricity consumption is equivalent to the average annual requirement of over 150,000 households.

From 2004 until 2022, according to analysis by the company led by Stefano Donnarumma, the lower consumption of electricity in Italy due to DST was overall around 10.9 billion kWh and has brought about, in financial terms, a savings of around €2 billion for its citizens.

Real-time data on the operation of the national electricity system can also be found on the Terna app, available on all app stores:
