Mumbai, May 30, 2024: Tata Steel has deployed two LNG-based trailers for the eco-friendly transportation of finished products from its Khopoli downstream plant. By using Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered trailers, the Company aims to reduce carbon emissions and embrace cleaner transportation in the supply chain.

Kapil Modi, Executive Plant Head (Khopoli & Hosur) at Tata Steel, flagged off the vehicles from the Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) at Khopoli, Raigad. Anand Mimani, CEO of Greenline Mobility Solutions Ltd, the logistics partner of the plant, was also present during the flag-off occasion.

Tata Steel is committed to driving positive change and delivering eco-friendly solutions that benefit its business and contribute to a greener tomorrow. The Company aims to dispatch 800 tons of Color Coating and Cold Rolled Closed Annealed (CRCA) material per month to Nagpur and Rajgurunagar (Pune) through these clean fuel vehicles from its Khopoli plant.

Kapil Modi, Executive Plant Head (Khopoli & Hosur), Tata Steel, said"This is a significant step forward in our quest to become a more sustainable steel producer. By deploying LNG-based trailers, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also setting the stage for a greener future in our logistics operations."

Tata Steel has taken a proactive approach to reducing carbon emissions and embracing cleaner transportation technologies as part of its endeavor to reduce Scope 3 emissions in the supply chain. It was the first steel producer in the country to deploy EVs for the transportation of finished steel. In 2021, Tata Steel partnered with an Indian start-up to pursue its aspiration of deploying EVs for steel transport.

The Company has already deployed compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, and electricity-powered vehicles in short lead road circuits and executed import shipments using bio-fuels and natural gas. Tata Steel was also the first steel-producing signatory to join the Sea Cargo Charter to measure and reduce the environmental impacts of global seaborne cargo.

In March 2024, Tata Steel received the first batch of next-generation, green-fuel-powered commercial vehicles from Tata Motors. This initial set of vehicles includes Prima tractor-trailers, tippers, and the Ultra EV bus, all powered by low-emission and emission-free technologies-LNG and electric battery.
