STMicroelectronics has announced plans to build a new plant in Catania, Sicily, dedicated to the high-volume production of 200 mm silicon carbide (SiC) wafers for power components and modules, as well as to test and packaging activities.

'This new unit is scheduled to start production in 2026 and reach full capacity by 2033, producing up to 15.000 wafers per week at full capacity', says the Franco-Italian chipmaker.

Together, the SiC substrate manufacturing unit currently under construction on the same site and this new plant will form the Group's Silicon Carbide Campus, a key step in supporting its customers with SiC components.

Total planned investment is around five billion euros, with Italian government support of around two billion under the EU Chips Act. Sustainable practices are integrated into the design, development and operation of the Campus.
