Shell announced on Friday that it had made the final investment decision concerning the future of the hydrocracker at its Wesseling refinery, south of Cologne, which it plans to convert into a production unit for automotive lubricants, such as motor oils.

The energy group explains that the conversion of its industrial facilities will enable it to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by around 620.000 tonnes per year, in line with the company's target of carbon neutrality by 2050.

While crude oil processing will cease at the Wesseling site before 2025, processing activities at the Godorf refinery, located between Bonn and Cologne, are set to continue.
