PR036/12
25 May 2012
MTR Corporation is offering its largest package of new fare
promotions ever to give back to passengers the full value of
the additional revenue it would receive in the year from
the
2012 fare adjustment, bringing savings of approximately $670
million to passengers. MTR
fares will be adjusted according to the Fare Adjustment
Mechanism on 17 June 2012.
"In putting together our fare promotion package for the year,
we have listened very closely to the views of the community
regarding MTR fares and fare promotions. The package is
designed to be attractive and effective, benefitting a wide
range of customers with different travel patterns. In fact,
the promotions being introduced are considered effective by
the community, such as 'Ride 10 Get 1 Free', discount for
second journeys on the same day and Tung Chung - Hong Kong
Monthly Pass," said Mr Jay Walder, Chief Executive Officer of
MTR Corporation.
"For the first time, we are offering free travel on weekends
and public holidays for children on MTR services, which we
believe will encourage people to more actively participate in
family and community activities. All Octopus users, whether
they are frequent or infrequent users of MTR services, taking
long journeys or short ones, will be able to take advantage
of one or more of the new promotions."
The new promotions being launched are in addition to the many
existing fare promotions and concessions that the MTR now
offer such as monthly passes on the West Rail and East Rail
lines, Tuen Mun - Nam Cheong Day Pass, Free Light Rail and
MTR Bus Connections, plus half price travel for children
under 12 and Hong Kong students. The MTR Corporation will
continue to offer existing fare concessions for the Elderly
and Persons with Disabilities on a voluntary basis. In the
meantime, it will work closely with the Government to
implement the Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the
Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities to enable them
to enjoy the concessionary fare of $2 per trip in the MTR
network.
The MTR Corporation announced the new fare promotions today
(25 May 2012) as it published the new MTR fares for 2012.
The new fare promotions will be rolled out over the next year starting 18 June 2012 for the benefit of different customer groups and commuters travelling at different times. All Octopus holders will have the opportunity to take advantage of the offers.

Ride 10 Get 1 Free
The popular "Ride 10 Get 1 Free" scheme for regular weekday Octopus users on the MTR will be brought back. Customers taking advantage of this promotion will be paying less at the new fare than what they are paying today. This promotion will be valid from 18 June to 30 December 2012.
Free Child Travel on Weekends and Public Holidays
Family outings will start on a high note as, for the first time, MTR Corporation offers free travel for Child Octopus holders on the MTR, Light Rail and MTR Bus. The offer will be valid on every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday from 28 July to 30 December 2012.
10% Discount for Same-day Second Trips
All Octopus users will enjoy a 10% discount on every second journey they take on the same day on the MTR, Light Rail and MTR Bus from 31 December to 30 June 2013.
Tung Chung - Hong Kong Monthly Pass
A new Tung Chung - Hong Kong Monthly Pass will bring savings for commuters travelling regularly to and from Tung Chung. Those taking the train regularly between Tung Chung Station and Hong Kong / Central Station for work could save about 30% each month. The new Monthly Pass will be available from October 2012 to June 2013 at $550 a month.
$20 MTR Shops Coupons for Monthly Pass Purchase
The current monthly pass promotions for the West Rail and
East Rail lines will be extended for another year to 30 June
2013. As an added bonus, a $20 MTR Shops Coupon will be
offered to passengers for every purchase of a Monthly Pass.
The offer is valid for six months starting from July to
December 2012 (October 2012 to March 2013 for Tung Chung-Hong
Kong Monthly Pass).
The fare promotion package also includes re-introduced and
enhanced interchange discounts. Details of these and other
promotions are shown in the Appendix.
Under the Fare Adjustment Mechanism (FAM), MTR fares are
reviewed once per year with the Overall Fare Adjustment Rate
calculated by a set formula that is based on the year-on-year
percentage changes in the Composite Consumer Price Index and
Nominal Wage Index (Transportation Section) for December of
the preceding year as published by the Census and Statistics
Department as well as a pre-determined productivity factor.
The productivity factor is 0% before 2013 and 0.1% with
effect from 2013. If the Overall Fare Adjustment Rate
calculated in any year is within the range of ±1.5%, there
will be no fare adjustment and the rate will be carried over
to be incorporated into the following year's Overall Fare
Adjustment Rate.
The overall fare adjustment rate for MTR fares in 2012 has
been calculated to be +5.4%. This is the rate to which the
weighted average adjustment of all individual MTR, Light Rail
and MTR Bus fares combined must equal. As a result of the
adjustment, fares for 61% of all passenger trips will be
adjusted upward by zero to 40 cents. About 29% of passenger
trips would see a 50 to 80 cent increase, and fares for 10%
of journeys would go up by 90 cents or above.

Government verifying compliance with the FAM.
