On Friday, Microsoft provided an update on its investigation into the large-scale hacking attack it suffered in January, which it attributes to a group of Russian hackers backed by Moscow.

According to its investigations, the attack carried out by the 'Midnight Blizzard' teams, encouraged by the Kremlin, was aimed at extracting information from its e-mail server in order to gain unauthorized access to other internal systems.

In its press release, the U.S. technology giant states that, to date, its investigation has not uncovered any evidence that the cybercriminals managed to reach the interfaces used to host its customers' applications.

And when secret data was intercepted by the hackers during e-mail exchanges with customers, Microsoft assures us that it contacted them to help them implement corrective defense measures.

Microsoft points out, however, that the volume of Midnight Blizzard activity increased up to tenfold in February compared with January, which had already seen intense aggression, particularly with regard to online password sharing.

The group adds that its investigation is continuing, and that it plans to continue informing the public of its findings.
