Alessandro Michele, formerly of Gucci, has been appointed artistic director of Valentino, replacing Pierpaolo Piccioli, Kering, shareholder of the Italian fashion house, announced on Thursday.

Renowned for his flamboyant style, Italian Alessandro Michele made a major contribution to Gucci's growth from 2015 to 2019. He left the brand, owned by Kering, at the end of 2022.

"I am delighted that Alessandro has been appointed creative director of Valentino and I am convinced that, thanks to his creativity, culture and multiple talents, he will be able to brilliantly interpret the unique heritage of this magnificent house and make it shine," said François-Henri Pinault, CEO of Kering, quoted in a statement.

"I look forward to seeing his passion, imagination and commitment at work in this new chapter for Valentino."

Kering bought a 30% stake in Valentino last year from Qatari investment fund Mayhoola, with the option to acquire the balance in five years.
