Luke Edwards: An ‘egg-cellent’ way of making a difference to our local community

Our colleagues in Penrith are really passionate about their local community, so recently went 'back to school' with one of our suppliers - to help demonstrate the principles of reusing and recycling.

Working with colleagues from our Penrith store, The Lakes Free Range Egg Company (The Lakes)spent the morning withpupils at Beaconside C of E Primary School to give old egg boxes a new lease of life by filling them with tulip bulbs to plant in their school garden.

The Lakes supplies free range and organic eggs to Sainsbury's, so, armed with a collection of used egg boxes and tulip bulbs a team from Sainsbury's and The Lakes visited the nursery class ready to get planting.

Not only do activities like this encourage children to get outdoors and explore new ways of learning, but the project has really helped educate these youngsters on the benefits of reusing and recycling a wide-range of packaging.

Helen Brass from The Lakes Free Range Egg Company said: 'We've visited Beaconside C of E School in the past to explain how eggs are produced, so it was nice to be able to go back and show the children new ways of reusing old egg boxes. We know our boxes are bio-degradable so the idea of planting them in the ground is a very simple way to demonstrate that too.

It's always nice to work in conjunction with our customers, so we partnered with the Sainsbury's Penrith store to help take the project into the school.'

Our colleagues in the Penrith store loved working with The Lakes on this project and we're pleased to hear that all of the children had an 'egg-cellent' time and can't wait to see their tulips in full bloom in the spring.
