FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) - In view of the easing rainfall, individual aircraft have been able to take off from Frankfurt Airport again since Wednesday afternoon. A spokesman for the airport operator Fraport told Deutsche Presse-Agentur that this should ease the situation regarding available parking positions somewhat. We will have to wait and see how the weather develops. According to a Fraport spokesperson, landings are also planned for the coming hours.

Aircraft take-offs at Germany's largest airport were temporarily suspended on Wednesday afternoon due to freezing rain. Fraport had justified this by stating that the aircraft could no longer be safely de-iced before take-off due to persistent freezing rain. As landings were still taking place, the parking positions were gradually filling up, so that the original plan was not to allow any more landings from 3 p.m. onwards.

In any case, hundreds of flights had already been canceled at Frankfurt Airport. The German Weather Service in Offenbach had issued the highest severe weather warning level for parts of Hesse and other regions of Germany on Wednesday due to the extreme risk of black ice./csc/DP/jha
