Ericsson announced Monday that it has signed a multi-year cross-licensing agreement with Chinese phone manufacturer Oppo.

The Swedish network equipment supplier says the agreement, which will enable it to collect royalties, covers a set of patents deemed essential for cellular technologies, starting with 5G.

Ericsson adds that the terms are in line with the standards defined by 3GPP, the global telecoms standards body, which provide for non-infringement of patent protection and fair remuneration of patents resulting from R&D activities.

Apart from their cross-licensing agreement, Ericsson and Oppo say they plan to cooperate on a number of projects in 5G, including device verification, consumer engagement and marketing.
