• The company distributed 81.8 TWh of power in Latin America last year, 5.1% more than in 2011. This underscores the buoyancy of the Latin American economy and especially of the economies where Endesa has operations: Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Peru.

Endesa, through its Enersis subsidiary and its power distribution companies in South America (Edesur, Ampla, Coelce, Chilectra, Codensa and Edelnor) ended 2012 with more than 14 million customers in Latin America, 2.6% more than the 13.65 million at the end of 2011. The company signed up 360,000 new customers in the year, reinforcing its status as the leading private utility in Latin America. This level of new customers is similar to mid-sized distributor's total customer base.

Data confirm the organic growth of distribution, a critical factor affording stability to this business. In the first nine months of 2012, the distribution business accounted for 49% of Endesa's consolidated EBITDA in Latin America of Euro 2,267 million, with the generation and transmission business representing the remaining 51%.

By country, the largest increase in customers was in Peru, of 5.2% (59,000 new customers) by the Edelnor subsidiary, followed by Colombia, of 3.7% (96,000 new customers) by Codensa and Empresa Eléctrica de Cundinamarca, and Brazil, 3.5% (114,000 new customers) by Coelce. Ampla, the company's distributor in Rio de Janeiro, increased its customer base by 2.6% (68,000 new customers) and Chilectra's grew 1.3% (21,000 customers), while Edesur's customers in Argentina (Buenos Aires) were broadly unchanged.

In all, Chilectra had 1.66 million customers, Edesur had 2.39 million, Edelnor 1.20 million, Ampla 2.71 million, Coelce 3.34 million and Codensa 2.72 million at the end of 2012.

Distributed power

The total amount of power distributed in the five Latin American markets where Endesa has operations (Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Peru) increased by 5.1% in 2012 to 81.8 TWh, with growth in all countries. This underscores the overall buoyancy of the Latin American economy and especially of the economies where Endesa has operations. Growth in these countries outstripped the OECD average, with analysts' forecasts for 2013 pointing to average growth of 4.7%.

The largest increases in energy distributed were registered by Coelce, with 11% (11.3 TWh), Chilectra, with 5.4% (15.3 TWh) and Ampla, with 6% (13.5 TWh). Edelnor, Codensa and Edesur all reported increases in energy distributed, of 4.5% (7.5 TWh), 3.2% (14.4 TWh) and 3% (19.8 TWh), respectively.
