• Malaria is one of the world's three largest infectious diseases along with TB and HIV.
  • In 2021, WHO estimated that there were 241 million infectious and 620,000 deaths.
  • In the middle to low prevalence areas where the epidemic level of malaria has declined to some extent, there is an increasing trend of the cases in which only a small number of malaria parasites are found in the blood.
  • These cases may not be detected by conventional malaria tests such as microscopy and RDT due to the limited sensitivity, and might lead to the delayed diagnosis, which in turn results in the expansion of secondary infections and hinders malaria elimination.
  • Therefore, Eiken has developed a high-sensitive detection kit for malaria that can be put to practical use in the developing countries by adopting a molecular test called LAMP, and to establish its operation in the real-world setting even under the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • As a result, we can expect the acceleration in worldwide malaria elimination.
