ABB announced this morning that it has won a major order to supply complete drive trains for the modernization of 19 5100-kilowatt (kW) locomotives operated by CFR Calatori, Romania's state-owned passenger rail transport company.

ABB will supply the traction equipment, including transformers, converters and electric motors, in partnership with Reloc, a local contractor specializing in the overhaul and modernization of locomotives.

The project will help to bring Romanian locomotives up to high levels of energy efficiency and reliability, in line with European transport standards.

This is a crucial issue, as the country's aging public transport infrastructure means that passenger trains currently run at an average speed of just 40 km/h, says ABB.
