ABB gave assurances on Friday that its activities were in compliance with US regulations, following yesterday's receipt of an accusatory letter from a parliamentary committee in Washington.

In a brief statement, the Swiss engineering group said it was taking the matter seriously and would examine the contents of the letter with the intention of providing an appropriate response.

In the letter, four Republican congressmen charged with investigating the security of the U.S. maritime sector, and more specifically its vulnerability to China, ask the Swiss company's executives to testify as part of their work.

In particular, they say they are concerned about ABB's relationship with ZPMC, a state-owned Chinese company specializing in the manufacture of cranes and port equipment, to which the group supplies software.

Recalling that it has been responding to the commissions' requests since the summer of 2023, ABB explains that it supplies software and electrical and automation hardware for port cranes used worldwide, including in the United States.

The group adds that its software technology is independent of crane manufacturers, including Chinese companies, and that US ports that acquire these cranes buy them from Chinese or other companies, but not from ABB.
