American Airlines seeks to close its profitability gap, Jefferies says
In its morning comments, Jefferies looks at the levers American Airlines (AA) is pulling to narrow its profitability shortfall versus direct peers Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. In 2019, AA's adjusted operating margin reached 8.1%, versus an average of 12.4% for Delta and United, i.e. a gap of about 400bp. This gap widened to roughly 600bp in 2025… and is expected to remain at a similar level in 2026.
