URS and W.L. Gore & Assocaites, Inc. Bring New Mercury
Control Technology to Coal-Fired Power Industry
AUSTIN, TX - July 12, 2012 - URS
Corporation has joined with W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc.
to commercialize a new mercury control technology for the
coal-fired power industry.
URS has become an authorized integrator of the GORE®
Mercury Control System for power applications, which
enables the utility industry to comply with upcoming
mercury and air toxics standards (MATS) regulation.
Integrating the GORE Mercury Control System into an
existing FGD system provides a cost-competitive solution
for MATS compliance, while offering a secondary benefit of
further SOx reduction, where needed.
"The GORE Mercury Control System is a game changer. It
provides outstanding performance for both Hg and SO2 while
preserving the quality of the fly ash without requiring
injection of chemicals such as activated carbon and
bromides," explained Jonas Klingspor, URS Vice
President.
Based on a novel sorbent polymer composite (SPC) material
developed by Gore, the GORE Mercury Control System provides
both high efficiency and a high capacity for removing
elemental and oxidized mercury from flue gas streams. Due
to the unique chemistry used, the SPC material is
insensitive to process or material changes that impact
mercury speciation and to common sorbent "poisons" such as
SOx and VOCs. This allows the SPC to continually reduce
mercury and SO2 concentrations in a gas stream for long
periods of time before needing replacement.
As an authorized integrator of Gore's technology, URS is
able to offer solutions to mercury emissions problems at
power plants around the world. "Gore is excited to be
partnered with URS, whose experience in the coal-fired
power markets provides tremendous credibility. They have
been involved in pilot-testing for the past several years
and have seen the potential of the new technology for both
mercury control and SOx reduction. The GORE Mercury Control
System is also a complementary addition to URS' strong
portfolio of emissions control solutions," according
to Jeff Kolde, Gore Business Leader.
