Electricity Supply & Demand Report for March 2016-
Electricity Demand (See Table 1)
Electric power sold in March declined from a year ago to 6,893 GWh, which was 99.6% compared to the same period of the previous year. Even with a continuous demand from post-quake projects, a shorter period of meter reading and our customers' energy saving efforts lowered our electric power sold year-on-year.
The details are as follows:
Non-Specified Scale Demand (excluding deregulated customers)
Power demand in the lighting (residential) sector was 101.0% compared to the same period of the previous year. In addition to a continuous demand from post-quake projects, an increased heating demand caused by extended periods of lower-than-normal temperatures contributed to the demand increase. The total of non-specified scale demand was 100.9% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Specified-Scale Demand (deregulated customers)
Despite a rebound in demand, electric power sold for commercial use was 99.3% of the same period of the previous year due to a decrease in contract demand and other factors. Overall power demand in the specified-scale sectors totaled 98.7% compared to the same period of the previous year.
In relation to the industrial and other sectors, power demand mostly came from large-scale customers, as described in the reference below:
[Reference]
- Large-Scale Industrial Customers
Our large-scale industrial demand was 97.6% compared to the same period of the previous year. Decline in production in some customers could not be covered by a demand from post-quake projects and a rebound from some customers' facilities operations which were in periodical maintenance the same period of the previous year.
- Electricity Supply (See Table 2)
Our generated and purchased power in March totaled 7,260 GWh, which was 97.7% compared to the same period of the previous year because of a decrease in heating demand due to warmer temperatures in mid-March than the previous year. This was below the year-before level for the first time in two months since January 2016.
(Power generated by our own hydro power stations)
Our hydro power generated output totaled 796 GWh, an decrease of 47 GWh from the previous year, despite a higher-than-normal water flow rate of 104.6%, which was 9.3% lower year-on-year.
(Power generated by our own thermal power stations)
Due to differences in operational conditions and other factors, the amount of our thermal power generated output was 5,347 GWh, an increase of 380 GWh from the previous year.
(Power generated by our own nuclear power stations)
All units of the Onagawa Nuclear Power Station and unit 1 of the Higashidori Nuclear Power Station have been shut down because of a regular inspection; therefore, there was no generated output from our nuclear power stations.
(Power generated by our own facilities using renewables and new energy)
Owing to differences in operational conditions at our geothermal power stations and other factors, the amount of generated output was 85 GWh, a decrease of 5 GWh from the previous year.
(Power purchased from others)
Differences in operational conditions in other companies' thermal power stations and other factors decreased the amount of our power purchased from others to 1,700 GWh, a decrease of 242 GWh from the previous year.
