(28 November 2015) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) is always committed to promoting and raising health, safety and environmental awareness of our employees and contractors. Since 1994, Towngas has organised the biennial Health, Safety and Environmental Day for 20 consecutive years. This year, we invited Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment, Sit Wing-hang, Deputy Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Leung Wing-yan, Deputy Commissioner for Labour, Lo Siu-hang, Assistant Director of Fire Services and Bonnie Yau, Executive Director of Occupational Safety & Health Council, together with Alfred Chan, Towngas Managing Director as well as Peter Wong, Towngas Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer - Utilities Business to officiate at the opening ceremony.

Safety and health of our employees, contractors, customers and the public has consistently been Towngas' major concern. For the past 10 years, we have reduced nearly 60% of industrial accidents. In the Hong Kong Occupational Safety & Health Awards 2014 & 2015, Towngas not only won two Grand Awards, including 'Safety Management System Award - Other Industries' Gold Award and 'Safety Culture Award' Gold Award, but also 9 awards for other areas, creating a new record for the Company.

Towngas Managing Director Alfred Chan said, 'Towngas makes full use of clean energy. In 2014, after the introduction of natural gas as feedstock for gas production, carbon emission per unit of gas produced decreased by 23%, which was the lowest on record. Furthermore, we focus on turning waste into energy with the use of landfill gas at Shuen Wan and Ta Kwu Ling Northeast New Territories landfill sites, and the landfill gas utilisation project at Tseung Kwan O Southeast New Territories landfill site has also commenced by the end of 2014. It is expected that carbon emission will be reduced by 56,000 tonnes per year. From 2006 until now, total carbon emission has been reduced by 715,000 tonnes with the use of landfill gas and natural gas for gas production, equivalent to the planting of 31 million trees.'

Alfred Chan also said, 'For waste reduction, Towngas has launched the 'Used Gas Appliance Recycling Programme' since 2003. More than 10,500 tonnes of used gas appliances were recycled instead of ending up in a landfill, and the recycling rate was up to 99%. In 2014 alone, the Company recycled nearly 1,200 tonnes of used gas appliances, creating a win-win-win solution for our customers, our contractors and the environment, as well as a supportive measure to the government's waste reduction campaign.'

Delivering his speech, Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment pointed out that 'Environmental protection relies on concerted efforts of the government and business sector including business companies like Towngas. As for the public, they can also make contribution by reducing carbon emissions and wastage in their daily lives. '
