Notice on the Survey and Investigation for the Construction of

Interim Storage Facilities for Used Fuel at the Kaminoseki Site

In response to a request to investigate measures to promote the region from the mayor of Kaminoseki-cho, Chugoku Electric has decided to proceed with investigation for the construction of interim storage facilities for used fuel (hereinafter, "interim storage facilities") within property owned by the Company in Kaminoseki-cho Oaza Nagashima, and on August 2, 2023, sent a response to the mayor of Kaminoseki-cho indicating our intent to perform a survey for confirming if interim storage facilities can be located within the site as well as for acquiring the data necessary for investigating a plan, as described below.

As construction for the Kaminoseki Nuclear Power Station has been stalled, in February of this year, Chugoku Electric received an urgent request from the mayor of Kaminoseki-cho to investigate new measures to promote the region that will help ensure resources for community development.

Responding to this request with sincerity, we have diligently investigated various matters, and as a result, sent our reply to the mayor of Kaminoseki-cho stating that we have decided to proceed with investigation for the construction of interim storage facilities within property owned by the Company in Kaminoseki-cho Oaza Nagashima as part of our measures for used fuel to contribute to the stable operation of the Shimane Nuclear Power Station and as an initiative that could become a new option to promote the region of Kaminoseki-cho. Furthermore, as we have investigated interim storage facilities, we have determined that, in light of factors such as the scale and economic feasibility of the facilities, it would be difficult for us to construct and operate said facilities independently, and we have decided to proceed with surveys and investigations in the future based on the assumption of joint development with The Kansai Electric Power Company, Inc., a company that has the same need for interim storage facilities.

We plan to formulate a specific plan based on the results of our survey and investigation. We believe that the construction of interim storage facilities will not only contribute to the regional promotion of Kaminoseki-cho and to the stable operation of the Shimane Nuclear Power Station, but will also match with the aims of the Japanese energy policy, which seeks to improve initiatives for achieving plans to expand storage capacity through collaboration between nuclear power operators, and will even contribute to the stable provision of electric power in western Japan.
