Shimadzu to Manufacture Key Boeing Components 787 Horizontal
Stabilizer Trim Actuator
Shimadzu Corporation recently signed a contract with Moog Inc
a tier 1 Supplier to Boeing in the United States in providing
the 787 HSTA
Since restarting our aircraft equipment business over a
half century ago, in 1955, Shimadzu has developed and
manufactured many aircraft components through technology
license agreements with companies involved in the U.S.
aircraft industry. Shimadzu started producing parts for
Boeing, the world's largest commercial aircraft
manufacturer, in 1976, for their 737 model. Since that
time, we have steadily built up the business by delivering
components for Boeing 747/757/767/777 models, such as
gearboxes, check valve for pneumatic system,
electromechanical actuators, and parts for doors, landing
gear, and wings. In 2006, Shimadzu received a package order
for major components used in the Boeing 747-8 trailing edge
flap drive system.
Based on this experience of system development, Shimadzu
has now received an order for horizontal stabilizer trim
actuators for the 787, which is a new area of commercial
aircraft flight controllers for Shimadzu.
Boeing 787 Horizontal Stabilizer Trim Actuator
The component for which Shimadzu will be newly responsible
for manufacturing is the horizontal stabilizer trim
actuator, a component in the flight control system for
Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner.
The subject part is an actuator installed on the back end
of the fuselage that enables operating the horizontal
stabilizer by transferring vertical linear motion to the
moveable part of the horizontal stabilizer. The first
products are due to be delivered in the first quarter of FY
2012, when production and shipments of the Boeing 787 is
scheduled to be fully under way. Total sales are expected
to exceed 5 billion yen by 2021.
About the 787 Family (Ref: Boeing Website)
The 787-8 Dreamliner will carry 210 - 250 passengers on
routes of 7,650 to 8,200 nautical miles (14,200 to 15,200
kilometers), while the 787-9 Dreamliner will carry 250 -
290 passengers on routes of 8,000 to 8,500 nautical miles
(14,800 to 15,750 kilometers). In addition to bringing
big-jet ranges to mid-size airplanes, the 787 provides
airlines with unmatched fuel efficiency, resulting in
exceptional environmental performance. The airplane uses
20 percent less fuel than today's similarly sized
airplanes. It will also travel at a similar speed as
today's fastest wide bodies, Mach 0.85. ANA and
Boeing completed the contractual delivery of the airplane
on Sept. 25, 2011.
