The scheme will deliver 471 bedrooms, communal facilities, external amenity space with a landscaped courtyard and a hub building fronting the floating harbour.

Designed by Bristol based architect Chapman Taylor, it references the area's industrial past and the nearby historic railway structures through the materials proposed.

Councillors unanimously approved the plans, recognising the need for additional PBSA to meet the requirements of the new University of Bristol Temple Quarter Campus, adjacent to Temple Meads Train Station. There was strong support for the layout which establishes design principles for future development sites in the area, with public access to the harbour and a dramatic improvement to the pedestrian experience along Avon Street.

Geraint Jones, Savills planning director, says, 'this secures delivery of high-quality student accommodation ideally located for the new Temple Quarter Campus. It is a significant decision, providing greater certainty regarding the Council's preferred approach to design within the Conservation Area and to flood mitigation within the City.'

John Nesbitt, managing director at Host Student Housing, said: 'The transformation of Bristol Temple Quarter and St Philip's Marsh is one of the UK's largest regeneration projects and we are excited to be able to play our part. Our team has worked extensively with the University, Bristol City Council and other local community stakeholders to unlock this development opportunity. It will not only create best in class student accommodation in the heart of the city, but also act as a catalyst for achieving the wider vision for this part of Bristol as a sustainable and flourishing new urban area."

Paul Smith from the University of Bristol said the apartments would provide 'high quality and affordable accommodation. (The scheme) will help keep further pressure off existing homes in the city which we appreciate is a major issue and a priority for the council.'
