(NEWARK, N.J. - March 10, 2017) Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), New Jersey's largest electric and gas utility, is dispatching 95 employees to help complete the restoration of service to customers in upstate New York. About 100,000 customers remain without power from the storm that brought strong winds to the region on Wednesday. Top gusts upward of 80 miles per hour were reported during the storm.

'The high winds wreaked havoc on trees and poles,' said John Latka, PSE&G senior vice president of electric and gas operations. 'At this point, much of the restoration work is very labor intensive, involving lines serving individual homes and businesses. Many of those lines are in backyards inaccessible to bucket trucks. Our personnel will have to make repairs the old fashioned way - climbing poles, carrying heavy equipment.'

The PSE&G contingent will begin arriving in in the Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y.-area this evening. There they will receive their assignments from New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E). In addition to linemen, PSE&G personnel responding include safety professionals, mechanics and logistical support.

'The utility industry is somewhat unique in that we all help each other,' 'We are fortunate to be in a position to help NYSEG and RG&E make repairs that will restore and keep their customers in service.'

Mutual aid allows for the sharing of resources such as labor and equipment during emergencies. The hosting utility reimburses for associated costs.
