In-plant operation reclaiming majority of outsourced
work, improving quality and service
Greenwich, CT - September 6, 2012 - Presstek, Inc.
(NASDAQ: PRST), a leading supplier of digital offset printing
solutions to the printing and communications industries,
today announced that the University of Southern Indiana's
Publishing Services has installed a Presstek 52DI digital
offset press. The shop has 11 full-time employees, including
three graphic designers. The shop also has first right of
refusal for the University's printing work. The University of
Southern Indiana is home to approximately 11,000
students.
"I had exposure to DI technology at a commercial printer
where I was previously employed," said Terri Bischoff,
Assistant Director of Publishing Services. "I understood the
benefits the process could bring to our business. Prior to
acquiring the Presstek DI, we were outsourcing 75% to 85% of
our color work, and have now been able to bring almost all of
that back in house, a tremendous cycle time and financial
benefit for the University."
"We are seeing a growing number of DI press installs in
in-plant operations," said Joe Demharter, Presstek's Vice
President of Sales & Marketing. "Its high level of
automation, small physical and environmental footprint and
extreme quality make it especially attractive to the in-plant
environment as these shops work to better serve their parent
organizations."
Publishing Services was seeing a growing demand for 4-color
work, and with two 2-color presses in place, had to outsource
the vast majority of it. Bischoff's analysis revealed that
the Presstek 52DI would be capable of handling the majority
of the shop's 4-color printing based on run lengths, sheet
size and quality requirements. "We had the money in reserve,
skilled staff, and adequate space. We believed we could make
this investment without breaking the bank and that now was
the perfect time to make the switch. The press has exceeded
our expectations, and our customers are thrilled. In
addition, the University is pleased with the level of
environmental sustainability the press brings to our
shop."
The Presstek 52DI is a highly automated 52cm landscape
digital offset 4-color press. The 52DI features support for
300 lpi and FM screening, the ability to go from digital file
to printed sheet in 10 minutes, and a small environmental
footprint. The press prints up to 10,000 sheets per hour and
has an optional inline aqueous coater available.
