Pick n Pay is doing it again, bringing an action-packed day of fun for the whole family.

This time it's in the form of a charity event featuring two of South Africa's favourite sports -  rugby and cricket - in the Pick n Pay Durban Challenge Clash of Kings!

The "Kings" of Kingspark (The Sharks) and the "Kings" of Kingsmead (The Sunfoil Dolphins) will battle it out in a T20 cricket match at Sahara Stadium, Kingsmead on Sunday 22 January.

Malcolm Mycroft, General Manager of Marketing Pick n Pay, said he was delighted to see the event coming to KwaZulu-Natal, after two successful events in Cape Town. Mycroft said the challenge will now give Durban sports fans the opportunity to spend a day watching their favourite teams, with family and friends, while giving Pick n Pay the opportunity to engage with their clients in the region.

Speaking at a press conference at Sahara Stadium, Kingsmead, Imraan Khan (Captain of the Sunfoil Dolphins) noted that he's looking forward to having some fun with The Sharks out on the field and seeing the fans enjoy the entertainment.

Keegan Daniel (Captain of The Sharks) welcomed the challenge and called for all fans in KZN to not miss out on this fun day.

From 10am to 5pm, the Pick n Pay Durban Challenge will bring together fans of both cricket and rugby as their respective teams fight for bragging rights in a 20/20-style contest.

Bronwen Rohland, Director Marketing and Sustainability, said that proceeds for the day would go to two charities: The Sharks Make a Difference Campaign, and the Sunfoil Development Programme for the Sunfoil Dolphins.

"South Africans love their sport and we're pleased to be sponsoring this event, which promises to be great fun, while giving back to the community."

"Each charity will receive R20,000. At Pick n Pay, supporting sustainable charities is part of our ethos, and we know our customers share our view with a large number of them choosing to donate their smart shopper points to charities via the kiosks in our stores," said Rohland.

The format of the game will have some tweaks to ensure that no teams are disadvantaged.

The rules are:

  • Regardless of toss, The Sharks to field first.
  • Both teams will use 11 players to bat.
  • The Sharks will field 15 players.

BOWLING RESTRICTIONS

  • No Sunfoil Dolphin bowler may bowl more than 4 overs.
  • No restriction on the number of overs bowled by The Sharks bowlers.
