Actions to contain the oil spill in Espadarte field offshore Brazil

Tokyo, January 9, 2019 - MODEC hereby reports an oil spill event from a cargo tank occurred on January 2nd in the FPSO Cidade do Rio de Janeiro (MV14), amounting to approximately 4.9m³ of oil to the sea.

MV14 was chartered to Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) in 2007 and is located at Espadarte oil field in Campos Basin, nearly 169km from Macaé coast, north of Rio de Janeiro state. The unit is currently preparing for demobilization and had stopped production since July 2018.

Relevant authorities and regulatory agencies were immediately notified, and an Emergency Plan was activated. Effective control measures were put in place resulting in the full control of the leak as of January 3rd. The oil content of the tank was offloaded hence no further spill is expected. An Investigation Team by Petrobras and MODEC is currently working in cooperation with the authorities to determine the cause of the incident. All actions taken are complied with applicable Health, Safety, Environment and Quality protocols.

MV14, as part of MODEC fleet, is certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and complies with local and international laws and regulations, which include rules issued by governmental agencies such as IBAMA (National Institution for Environment and Natural Resources), the Brazilian Navy and ANP (National Agency for Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels).
