On Monday, January 27, 2020, Valter Sanches, General Secretary of IndustriALL Global Union, and Florent Menegaux, Chief Executive Officer of the Michelin Group, signed an agreement creating the Michelin Global Works Council, after a nearly two-year period of discussion and negotiation.
IndustriALL Global Union represents over 50 million workers in 140 countries in the mining, energy and manufacturing sectors. The signing of agreement therefore constitutes a key milestone for the Michelin Group in the process begun several years ago to foster open, constructive and responsible dialogue at the international level. The new employee representative organization is notably inspired by the work undertaken, the methods used and the positive results achieved by the Michelin European Works Council.
The Michelin Global Works Council was set up to meet several objectives:
Create a new forum for social dialogue that represents employees in all of Michelin's host countries.
Gain a better understanding of the social, environmental and economic trends that impact Michelin worldwide.
Drive an improvement, in all countries, in the social support provided during economic change.
The Council will therefore be tasked, in particular, with:
Sharing the Group's strategic objectives and results, in complete transaparency, with all of Michelin's host countries.
Contributing to the co-construction of key policies in such areas as support for organizational change, competitiveness, employee welfare, sustainable development and diversity, particularly the inclusion of employees with disabilities.
The Michelin Global Works Council will be chaired by Remi de Verdilhac, Chief Administrative Officer of the Michelin Group's headquarters. The Council's 50 members will be designated in February to give them ample time to prepare for the new organization's first meeting, scheduled to take place in Clermont-Ferrand on April 1, 2020.
Global works councils are a strategic way to include multinational companies in our action plan. The creation of a global works council by Michelin, the industry leader, is another step forward in the development of the Group's employee relations process.
