WASHINGTON/FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) - A computer glitch with serious consequences for air traffic in the United States has had no impact at Germany's largest airport in Frankfurt. "Flight operations are running as normal," a spokesman for airport operator Fraport told Deutsche Presse-Agentur on Wednesday. Lufthansa had also previously said the glitch with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would not affect flights to and from the United States.

In the U.S., the computer glitch brought air traffic largely to a standstill in the morning. In the meantime, the first aircraft have taken off again, the FAA said via Twitter shortly before 9:00 a.m. local time in Washington. Shortly after the announcement of the FAA, according to the website flightaware.com, more than 3500 flights within, to or from the U.S. were delayed, almost 400 were cancelled.

In the morning, the so-called Notam system, which provides pilots and ground personnel with important safety information and notifications of disruptions in flight operations, had failed. The FAA then grounded domestic flights. International flights were not affected. The reason for the outage is not yet clear, the White House said. There was no indication of a cyber attack./csc/ceb/DP/nas
