IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA has awarded GE the supply contract for the installation of a gas turbine at Germany's Lichterfelde combined-cycle plant.

GE will provide the advanced technology 9F gas turbine which delivers power with high efficiency, availability, reliability and low emissions. In addition, GE will provide operations and maintenance of the turbine for 25 years.

The IBERDROLA Group subsidiary was awarded the €240 million contract to complete turnkey construction of Lichterfelde power plant in Germany after winning an international tender launched by Swedish energy company Vattenfall.

Vattenfall has obtained planning permission to begin civil works, including the final construction license. Thanks to consents being ready three months earlier than anticipated, IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA has begun work on the deep foundations and the company is installing its temporary offices and deploying its construction team on the site.

The company will be responsible for the project's entire development, including design, engineering, procurement, construction, assembly and commissioning of the new plant. With its 300 megawatts (MW) electricity capacity (the 260-MW GE gas turbine plus a 40-MW electric turbine) and 225 MW thermal capacity, the plant will supply Berlin's Southwest with electricity and district heating.

The new combined-cycle gas turbine power plant will replace an existing thermal power plant operating on the site since 1974. This initiative is an important part of a climate protection agreement, signed by the Senate of Berlin and Vattenfall to reduce carbon emissions and upgrade the utility's electricity generation facilities.

Over the past few years, both companies have worked together on similar energy generation projects in Spain, Lithuania, Qatar or Algeria. Proof of the excellent relationship between the two was the appointment of IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA as Valued GE Customer.

With its headquarters in the Basque town of Erandio, the IBERDROLA Group subsidiary is a world leading energy engineering company that builds "turnkey" projects in the generation, nuclear, networks and renewables sectors, both for other IBERDROLA GROUP companies as well as for third parties.
