Solar park in Schleswig-Holstein supplies green electricity for Metrans locomotives

Metrans is taking the next step on the way to sustainable rail logistics. The subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has integrated a state-of-the-art photovoltaic system into its own energy mix. Its rail connections in Germany are already powered 100 per cent by green electricity.

Peter Kiss, Metrans CEO: "At Metrans, we are working on an ecologically balanced business model, which also includes generating our own electricity from sustainable sources. This enables us to reduce fluctuations in electricity prices and offer our customers service solutions that are not only climate-friendly, but also make economic sense."

By using the large-scale photovoltaic system in Schleswig-Holstein, Metrans Rail Deutschland can cover around ten percent of its annual requirements of more than 120 gigawatt hours. The ground-mounted solar plant was built in Bimöhlen (Schleswig-Holstein) by ENERPARC AG. The solar power generated is marketed by the subsidiary Sunnic Lighthouse, which has concluded a power purchase agreement with Metrans Rail Deutschland for the exclusive supply. As the rail power supplier, Stadtwerke Tübingen integrates the electricity into Metrans' energy mix. The cooperation is to be expanded in the long term.

With the HHLA Pure product, HHLA and Metrans offer both climate-friendly handling and transportation between the European seaport terminals and their hinterland. The service is available on around 380 routes in the Metrans network.
