Following declines of 21.5% in July and 20.2% in August, the
Italian auto market recorded another sharp drop in demand in
September with new car sales down 25.7% from one year ago to
less than 110,000 vehicles. This represents the worst
September since 1984 (107,000 vehicles sold).
Year-to-date, sales were less than 1,091,000 vehicles,
representing a 20.5% decline
from the same period a year ago.
In total, Fiat Group brands sold 33,000 vehicles for the
month of September, performing marginally better than the
market overall resulting in a share gain of 0.6 percentage
points to 30.3%. For the first nine months of the year, Group
sales totaled nearly 324,000 vehicles with share at 29.7%,
substantially in line with the prior year.
Fiat brand models topped the rankings once again in
September. The Panda retained
its position as the number one car in Italy with more than
9,100 units sold and a 42.1% share of the A segment.
Runner-up was the Punto with nearly 6,800 vehicles sold and a
20.1% share of the B segment. The 500 took third place with
3,500 vehicles sold, representing a 16.4% share of the A
segment. The Panda and 500 took a combined
58.5% share of the A segment. The soon-to-be-launched 4x4 and
Trekking versions are expected to increase the appeal of the
Panda even further. Strong performance also for the Freemont,
one of the most sold models in its segment with an 18.8%
share for month.
Optimum results also for the brand's Natural Power range,
which registered an 86.1%
segment share in September. That figure compares with an
82.4% share in August and
79.1% share in July.
The Lancia Ypsilon recorded another excellent month, ranking
among the top 10
overall and capturing a 9.9% share of the B segment.
With nearly 3,200 cars sold during the month, Alfa Romeo
registered a 2.9% share of the market (+0.08 p.p.). For the
first nine months, sales totaled nearly 34,000 vehicles, with
share at 3.1%.
The Giulietta ranked in the top 10 once again in September
and took a 17.3% share of the C segment.
