Rosseti FGC UES has finalized upgrade of 220 kV Kiembai main substation in Orenburg Region

01/14/2021

Rosseti FGC UES (FGC UES, PJSC) has finalized the rehabilitation of 220 kV Kiembai Substation. The facility saw the assembly of new 10 kV indoor switch gear (ISG) and the installation of switching equipment and changes to the configuration of its 220 kV outdoor switch gear. This resulted in greater reliability of energy supply to the consumers of the eastern Orenburg Region, including Orenburg Minerals mining and processing plant, Russia's major chrysotile asbestos producer.

Outdoor switch gear operations led to the installation of two new 220 kV SF6 circuit breakers. Unlike air and oil circuit breakers, their SF6 counterparts are easy to maintain and reliable in operation. Their service life is 30 years. They are also safer and eco-friendlier. Owing to the special properties of SF6, circuit breakers enable reliable operation of the substation in case of extreme daily temperature variations.

Indoor switch gear features vacuum circuit breakers with a selective arc fault circuit interrupter. Outdated electromechanical protective relays and controls were replaced with new domestically manufactured microprocessor-based equipment. New devices will allow quicker and more efficient response to potential emergencies and will improve the quality of electricity distribution to consumers at 10 kV and 110 kV voltage levels.

The capacity of 220 kV Kiembai Substation is 321.5 MVA. Its reliable operation affects the reliability of power supply to the Yasnensky, Svetlinsky, Adamovsky, and Dombarovsky Districts of the region with a population of some 55,000 people, large manufacturing plants, including those of Orenburg Minerals Industrial Park and the infrastructure assets of Russian Railways.
