(Alliance News) - Eni Spa announced Wednesday that Eni Rewind has submitted a project for the sustainable and innovative management of civil sewage sludge, which is classified as non-hazardous waste and consists of about 80 percent water.

Eni's environmental company filed an application with the Veneto Region in November 2022 for the purpose of issuing a Single Regional Authorization Measure for the project, which envisages the construction of a plant for the drying and subsequent energy valorization of sludge, with an estimated investment of EUR140 million and the reuse of a disused area of Eni Rewind in the petrochemical plant in Porto Marghera.

The project, in line with the Veneto Region's Regional Plan for the Management of Urban and Special Waste, envisages the treatment when fully operational of up to 190,000 tons/year of sludge produced by the wastewater treatment plants of the Viveracqua consortium, which groups the region's 12 main integrated water service operators.

The area identified for implementation is Island 46, a property area that has already undergone reclamation and is therefore suitable for reuse for new industrial initiatives. The project involves the construction of the plant within an architectural structure reminiscent of the shape of a ship, in keeping with the Southern Industrial Canal, and the implementation of the best technologies for the control of noise and odor emissions is planned.

Electricity is produced from the sludge treatment process by heat recovery boilers, which generate superheated steam used to dry the sludge delivered. The surplus energy will be fed into the power grid of the Porto Marghera industrial hub.

Eni's stock on Wednesday closed up 1.9 percent at EUR14.24 per share.
