Washington Real Estate Investment Trust is (WREIT) looking to sell its medical office building unit. WREIT is selling its portfolio of medical office buildings which is expected to simplify its business model and enable the company to focus on office, multifamily and retail properties. The unit account for 15% of WREIT's operating income.

The unit has 17 properties and 1.3 million square feet, the largest portfolio of medical office buildings in the Washington area. George McKenzie, Chief Executive Officer of WREIT has notified the board that he will retire at the end of 2013, but will remain with the company to oversee the sale of the medical office unit.
