RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Massey Energy (NYSE: MEE) today announced the promotions of John M. Poma to Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer and Jeffrey M. Gillenwater to Vice President - Human Resources.

Poma will be responsible for managing all administrative functions of the Company. "John has proven himself in providing cross-functional expertise in many areas, including legal services, human resources, benefits, aviation, workers' compensation, and risk management. He has found creative ways to improve services and reduce expense and is uniquely suited to ensure that the administrative functions of the Company are properly aligned with the creation of shareholder value," says Don L. Blankenship, Chairman and CEO.

Poma joined the Company in 1996 as Corporate Counsel and was most recently Vice President - Human Resources. Poma holds a bachelor of arts degree and a masters degree in Business Administration from the College of William and Mary as well as a juris doctor degree from Emory University. Prior to joining Massey, Poma practiced law in Huntington, West Virginia and Richmond, Virginia. Poma is currently a member of the Business Partners Board of the Mason School of Business at the College of William and Mary.

Gillenwater will be responsible for all aspects of human resources within the company. He began his career with Massey in 1994 in human resources at its Rawl Sales subsidiary. Most recently, he served as Director - External Affairs and held responsibility for public relations and staffing at the Company's mining subsidiaries.

"Jeff has been a key member of the Company's human resources team throughout his career with Massey. In his new position, he will continue to be instrumental in helping the Company attract and retain highly skilled and qualified miners. There are few people in the coal industry that understand the labor market in Central Appalachia as well as Jeff," Blankenship said. A native of Williamson, West Virginia, Gillenwater earned a bachelors degree in Business Administration from Marshall University.
