Alibaba expanded its new headquarters in New York. The $200 billion company leased space in a new boutique office building at 860 Washington St. in the meatpacking district over the summer, sources reported, and the company is now expanding its footprint to more than 30,000 square feet, according to several people familiar with the deal. Alibaba has leased the seventh, eighth and ninth floors of the building, where asking rents range as high as $160 per square foot, among the priciest in downtown Manhattan. According to a person with knowledge of the deal, the company had initially committed to the 10-story building's seventh floor, but subsequently expanded onto the eighth and has now decided to take over the ninth floor as well, citing an increase in its 'programming and plans' for New York City. A source also confirmed that Jack Ma, Alibaba's billionaire founder, will have an office in the new space. Several other tenants have previously been reported to have leased space at the property, including the residential development firm Delos Living. Electric-car maker Tesla signed on in the fall for a portion of the building's ground-floor retail space, where it plans to open its second Manhattan showroom for high-end automobiles.
