The Toronto Stock Exchange's  S&P/TSX rose 91.12 points, or 0.56 percent, to 16,284.53.

Leading the index were CannTrust Holdings Inc, up 6.6 percent, Cronos Group Inc, up 6.2 percent, and Birchcliff Energy Ltd, higher by 6 percent.

Lagging shares were Iamgold Corp, down 3.9 percent, New Gold Inc, down 3.7 percent, and MAG Silver Corp, lower by 3.2 percent.

On the TSX 165 issues rose and 73 fell as a 2.3-to-1 ratio favored advancers. There were 14 new highs and 6 new lows, with total volume of 204.9 million shares.

The most heavily traded shares by volume were Enbridge Inc, Manulife Financial Corp and Aurora Cannabis Inc.

The TSX's energy group rose 3.12 points, or 2.1 percent, while the financials sector climbed 1.63 points, or 0.5 percent.

West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 1.11 percent, or $0.68, to $61.72 a barrel. Brent crude  rose 1.34 percent, or $0.94, to $71.17 [O/R]

The TSX is up 13.7 percent for the year.
