The Commerce Department reported a 5.5% fall in US housing starts in May compared with the previous month, to an annualized rate of 1,277,000, following a 4.1% rebound in April.

U.S. building permits - intended to be a precursor of future housing starts - fell by 3.8% to 1,386,000 last month. Finally, housing completions fell by 8.4% to 1,514,000.
