NEW YORK, Jan 31 (Reuters) - With inflation at the highest level in nearly four decades and interest rates near zero, it is time for the Federal Reserve to begin removing the support it offered during the pandemic, Kansas City Fed President Esther George said on Monday.

"Ideally, you always want to go gradually," George said during an event organized by the Economic Club of Indiana, adding interest rates are a "long way" from what might be considered normal.

"But I do think the Federal Reserve is going to have to move deliberately in its decisions to withdraw accommodation and that was signaled at our last meeting." (Reporting by Jonnelle Marte Editing by Chris Reese)
