Normally it is museums that stage "Long Night" events, but last Friday the Zumtobel Group's training workshop in Dornbirn held its own inaugural "Long Night of Vocational Training" attracting 300 visitors. According to Head of Vocational Training Otto Bechter the event was designed to assist in the search for talented youngsters. "The widespread lack of skilled workers is affecting us, too, and through this event we were out to fire up an interest in our company among young people and give them some insight into the World of Light. Vocational training is a long-term value at the Zumtobel Group. We train people to meet our own needs and offer all those who complete the course a permanent job."

The training workshop covers 2,000 square metres. This is where some 80 apprentices a year are prepared for the day-to-day realities of five technical professions. Last Friday evening, from 6 to 10 p.m. this high-tech space was transformed into a marketplace for young people. The visitors had only one thing in mind: finding out about the various professions they could train for and the qualifications they needed to win a place as an apprentice. Displays and themed stands provided information about the contents of an apprenticeship as an electrical engineer, electronics technician, metalworker, production technician and plastics technician. Current apprentices were on hand to answer questions from their potential successors, while specially prepared installations provided a visual impression of various lighting effects to offer the visitors a tangible experience of the medium of light.

Taster days
In February and March the Zumtobel Group is offering two taster days at which potential future apprentices can gain a first-hand impression of operations at the Zumtobel and Tridonic brands. Each participant gets to take home a table lamp that they have been involved in manufacturing and assembling. To register, call Markus Huber on tel. +43 5572/509-1339.
