SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -  Xcel Energy crews today are working to repair damage to the underground electricity system in downtown Sioux Falls and to restore power to about 200 customers who remain without service.

The cause of the outage, which started at 4:37 a.m., is under investigation. More than 500 customers initially were affected; power was restored in about an hour to about 300 customers.

Manhole covers were blown off and a sidewalk buckled when the incident started. The Sioux Falls Fire Department is helping Xcel Energy workers safely assess the damage.

Additional Xcel Energy crews are en route from the Twin Cities to assist with the repairs and power restoration. An estimated time for full restoration won't be available until crews have had an opportunity to assess the damage.
